The Navagraha: Nine Planetary Deities of Vedic Tradition
In Vedic thought, the nine planets are living intelligences, not mere celestial bodies. Understanding their mythology unlocks a deeper layer of chart interpretation.
The Navagraha are the nine 'grahas' — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. In temples across India they are honoured as deities, each with its own direction, colour, grain, and offering.
Surya (Sun) is the soul and vitality. Chandra (Moon) governs the mind and emotions. Mangala (Mars) rules courage and energy. Budha (Mercury) presides over intellect and speech. Brihaspati (Jupiter) is the guru of wisdom and dharma. Shukra (Venus) governs love, art, and pleasure. Shani (Saturn) is the lord of discipline, time, and karma.
Rahu and Ketu, the shadow planets, are not physical bodies but the mathematical points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. Rahu represents worldly desire and obsession; Ketu represents detachment and liberation. Together they form the karmic axis of the chart.
Approaching the grahas as intelligences rather than abstractions changes how you read a chart. A difficult Saturn is not a punishment but a teacher of patience. A strong Jupiter is grace earned across lifetimes. The Navagraha invite a relationship, not just a calculation.
