Gemstones and the Nine Planets: Choosing the Right Stone
Wearing the wrong gemstone can amplify a difficult planet rather than soothe it. Learn which stone aligns with each of the nine planets and the protocols for activating them safely.
In Jyotish, gemstones are prescribed to strengthen a beneficial planet in your chart. Each of the nine planets (Navagraha) is associated with a specific stone whose colour and vibration resonate with that planet's energy.
The classical associations are: Sun — ruby (Manik); Moon — pearl (Moti); Mars — red coral (Moonga); Mercury — emerald (Panna); Jupiter — yellow sapphire (Pukhraj); Venus — diamond (Heera); Saturn — blue sapphire (Neelam); Rahu — hessonite (Gomed); and Ketu — cat's eye (Lehsunia).
A gemstone should never be chosen by Sun sign alone. The right stone depends on the planet's ownership and placement in your specific birth chart. Blue sapphire in particular is famously fast-acting and is traditionally tested before being worn permanently.
Activation matters as much as selection. Stones are typically energised with mantras, worn on a prescribed finger and metal, and first put on during an auspicious muhurta on the planet's weekday. When in doubt, consult a qualified astrologer rather than self-prescribing — the goal is harmony, not a stronger malefic.
