Guna Milan Explained: How Vedic Kundli Matching Really Works
Is an 18-out-of-36 Guna score enough? Does Mangal Dosha really doom a marriage? A clear, myth-free guide to how Ashtakoot kundli matching actually works.
In Vedic tradition, kundli matching — also called Guna Milan or Ashtakoot Milan — assesses the compatibility of two birth charts before marriage. The system scores eight factors (kootas) for a maximum of 36 points.
The eight kootas are Varna (1 point, ego and spiritual compatibility), Vashya (2, mutual influence), Tara (3, health and well-being), Yoni (4, physical and intimate compatibility), Graha Maitri (5, mental affinity), Gana (6, temperament), Bhakoot (7, emotional and financial harmony), and Nadi (8, health and progeny).
A total of 18 or above is traditionally considered acceptable, 24 to 32 is very good, and above 32 is excellent. But the headline number is only the beginning. A skilled astrologer weighs which kootas are strong, examines Mangal Dosha (Manglik status), and studies the wider chart rather than reducing a relationship to a single figure.
The most important myth to retire: a low score does not condemn a marriage, and a high score does not guarantee happiness. Guna Milan is a diagnostic tool, not a verdict. Communication, maturity, and shared values still do the heavy lifting in any partnership.
